JE52 Hopes?

In Emily Dickinson’s “If You Were Coming In The Fall”, she described her desire to meet a guy whom she loved. That kind of hope and uncertainty had brought up Emily Dickinson’s optimism.  I think the “hope” expressed in the poem is common in modern society. This feeling is expressed in lots of love songs, which describes the lost of a man or woman and hopes to see him or her again. Sometimes people lost their loves for different reasons, not necessarily a break up. They might be going to a war or just had a serious accident. At this point, people would just want their love to come back. In Dickinson’s life, her family didn't approve her marriage. They were forced to be separated. Although Dickinson still showed her optimism for that little chance, she extinguished the hope with the last stanza, where she came back to reality. She became pessimistic again because she realized that it was merely a silly dream. I would say her works have a consistent theme. For “If You Were Coming In The Fall”, she saw the brighter side of life, but get back to her mood of being lonely again. For many times, I wish I could made the right decisions when I was younger. However, they were all too late. Now, I can just focus on where I am now and my future.
