In the story The Devil and Tom Walker, the author emphasized the relationship between nature and the atmosphere of the setting. For example, it said that the treasure is buried in the woods, which is relative to nature. The setting of the story is based on nature as well (the woods, bushes, and the swamp). He also described the inner feelings and emotions of each character. Furthermore, he wrote about the deal with the devil and showed a darker side of Romanticism. In a common point of view, I would classify it in a science fiction or mysterious fiction because of the devil and the setting. However, it is actually a romantic story according to the real meaning of Romanticism. I think contemporary authors might handle the same plot with describing lots of other details such how the devil control people using his evil power. I don't think contemporary authors would really connect the story with nature. Most people now like things about the dark power, magic, etc. Nevertheless, the same details would definitely be the character’s feelings and how the setting creates the atmosphere of the story. The result might not be the same, however. I think the result could be that the main character escaped his fate and change how he see things.
