“Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God” by Jonathan Edwards and “The Devil and Tom Walker” by Washington Irving both gave an idea of avoiding evil things. In the “Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God”, people were encouraged to believe in God and Jesus Christ and that we could go to hell if we do something bad. In “The Devil and Tom Walker”, “greed” is the main theme of the story. I think the biggest literary use they had in common is that both authors used “fear” as a motivator. They both showed that what would happen if people didn't follow the social morality. It is either going to hell or being engulfed by the devil. In “Sinners in hands of an Angry God”, relationships between human beings and justice were being connected as the God’s power and His kindness on saving people. In “The Devil and Tom Walker”, justice was illustrated in the deal between the devil and Tom. Both stories’ purposes were intended to strike people’s hearts. Edward mentioned that the only way to salvation is to believe in Jesus Christ as their savior. Basically it is a religious sermon which tell people what is the right way to be the best we can be.
