JE68 What's His Problem?

In the poem, the Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock, written by T.S. Eliot, prufrock had problems with meeting his date, especially as his age. He was afraid simply because he was not confident in his physical appearance anymore. In line 2-3, it said “When the evening is spread out against the sky like a patient etherized upon a table”, suggested that he was extremely nervous about the night for what it might happen between him and the woman. Also, in line 37-44, the “Do I dare” strongly implies his diffidence in himself. Prufrock even started to picture the woman’s reaction: “How his hair growing so thin?”, “But how his arms and legs are thin?”. He felt that the woman would dislike him based on this physical appearance – bald, old, and thin. I think the woman might not think the same as Prufrock pictured because the woman might be worrying about the same thing as well. I sympathize Prufrock’s attitude toward himself. Sometimes we just have to think nothing and enjoy life. I think he is a perfectionist because he really wanted the date to be perfect but he knew that he wasn’t. I think he just had to let go or else he might regret it for the rest of his life.
